Cybercriminals Exploit Litecoin’s X Account in Scam Token Scheme

  • Litecoin’s X account was hacked on Jan. 11, promoting a fake Solana token.
  • The fraudulent token post was quickly deleted by Litecoin’s team.
  • Hack led to Litecoin removing a compromised delegated account to secure its X profile.

On January 11, 2025, Litecoin’s official X (formerly Twitter) account was compromised, allowing a hacker to promote a fraudulent token associated with the Solana blockchain. The hacker’s post featured a contract address and a pump. The fun link claims Litecoin (LTC) was “now in Solana.” The grammatically incorrect post was deleted shortly after it appeared.

Litecoin’s team confirmed the incident, stating that a compromised delegated account was responsible for the breach. The team acted quickly to regain control of the account and remove the unauthorized posts. They assured followers that the compromised access point had been identified and disabled.

This breach adds to the growing social media hacks targeting cryptocurrency platforms to promote fake tokens and phishing schemes.

Rising Incidents of Cryptocurrency Account Hacks

The incident with Litecoin’s X account shows that the cryptocurrency industry has been experiencing increased cyber theft incidents. Over the past few months, there have been cases of hacking of some of the leading Web3 companies, protocols, and personalities. They are some of the most common ways hackers introduce people to fraudulent projects or tokens, resulting in large-scale losses.

Notable incidents include the compromise of EigenLayer’s X account in October 2024, which was used to advertise a fake airdrop campaign. Similarly, the Cardano Foundation’s X account was hacked in December 2024 to promote a fake token called “ADAsol.” These scams often exploit followers’ trust to trick them into engaging with malicious links or transferring funds.

The Litecoin team’s swift action to address the breach highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to prevent further incidents.

Need for Enhanced Cybersecurity in the Crypto Sector

Cybersecurity experts also note that the cryptocurrency industry requires stronger measures to avoid similar attacks. Hackers tend to use delegated accounts or poor security measures to penetrate official communication channels. Enhancing the authentication procedure and educating users is the best way to prevent them.

For instance, in October 2024, EigenLayer’s account was hacked, and this was used to popularize a fake airdrop. Likewise, rapper Wiz Khalifa’s account was hacked in November 2024, and the hacker promoted a fake celebrity meme cryptocurrency. These cases point to the increasing need to enhance cybersecurity measures, hence protecting social media accounts from being fake and misused.
