Microsoft Teams market share soars 31%, boosted by AI

Microsoft Teams has emerged as a formidable contender, challenging the dominance of established players like Zoom thanks in part to its innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Teams’ market share has risen by more than 31% over the past year, inching closer to Zoom.

Microsoft Teams is attractive as a video conferencing solution because it can enforce strict security protocols and embed Teams within other Office applications. Additionally, one of the standout features contributing to Teams’ success is its innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Recently, tech visionary Bill Gates disclosed in an interview that Microsoft’s Copilot, a meeting summary tool in Microsoft Teams, is his most-used AI feature. In addition to creating summaries, Gates considers the AI-powered application particularly useful because it lets users ask questions regarding the meeting material. Given that he frequently uses Microsoft Teams, Gates claims that this feature has increased his efficiency at work. He continued by praising the tool’s capability to offer real-time interactions in addition to summaries.

Microsoft Teams challenges Zoom’s market share

Zoom remains the top video conferencing application, with an 8.74 user rating in 2024. However, this year’s rating and market shares are slightly lower compared to 2023.

Last year, its user rating was 8.79, representing a marginal 0.6% slip. Furthermore, its market shares in 2023 were 57.24%, culminating in another 2.3% drop. In contrast, Microsoft Teams market shares increased by over 30%, reaching 32.29% from 24.57% in 2023, ranking second after Zoom. However, its user rating fell marginally, marking a 0.3% fall, settling at 7.79 in 2024.

Microsoft Teams is gaining traction due to its Office 365 integration

Microsoft Teams is deeply immersed in the Office 365 environment, with all Word, PowerPoint, and other 365 features available from the Microsoft Teams console. Microsoft Teams also cooperates with more than 250 applications, including Salesforce, Asana, Trello, MindMeister, Smartsheet, Poll Everywhere, SurveyMonkey, and Priority Matrix, all of which have their own Teams integration.

Moreover, its security protocols, including multi-factor authentication and in-transit encrypted data features, have also helped to attract a large number of users, with the app having over 300 million users by the end of 2023.
