Altcoin trading is becoming more dominant on the Binance crypto exchange, steadily growing from 50.8% in May 2024 to 78% trading volume in January 2025. The trend has led crypto analysts to suggest that the altcoins market is ready for a bull run in 2025.
Crypto analyst and conversation starter Burakkesmeci said, “With growing retail participation, the dominance of altcoins (others, excluding Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH)) in Binance trading volume has consistently risen, reaching 77.83% as of January 2025. This trend highlights the growing shift of investor focus towards altcoins on the largest exchange by trading volume.”
Binance users drive altcoin trading volume higher
According to Burakkesmeci, the Binance altcoin trading volume by pairs is about 78% in January 2025, accounting for 11% growth in the last five months. The growth in altcoin trading volume has been steady and consistent, and there is growing hope among analysts that a potential bull market is around the corner.
CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season index is not pulling huge numbers for altcoins, as seen on Binance. It gives altcoins a score of 46%, suggesting that Bitcoin season is in the offing. The index compares the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap based on their rolling 90-day price performances.
Most traders rely on Bitcoin dominance to establish when the altcoin season will start. Bitcoin dominance is a metric that shows its share of total market cap, and mostly, when it drops, it signals the start of an altcoin season. The current data from TradingView places Bitcoin dominance at 57.74%, translating to a 2.41% rise over the last 30 days.
Ether’s growth may trigger the entire altcoin market
Mister Crypto, a vocal crypto trader and analyst on X, believes that Ether will break the resistance in the coming weeks and shoot from $4000 to $8000. Such growth will trigger the entire altcoin market to grow. Ether is trading at $3,279, down 15.77% over the past 30 days.
The conversations around Bitcoin are diverse this year, with most players agreeing that 2025 will be a huge year for cryptocurrency. Bitwise Invest CEO Hunter Horsley added his voice to the conversation through an X post. He said that he is fired up for the leap forward BTC and other cryptos will make this year.
Other analysts warn that the altcoin season may be different from other years. Ki Young Ju, CEO of CryptoQuant, believes that the market cycle may show an irregular pattern as altcoin season is no longer triggered by investors rotating capital gains from Bitcoin into altcoins.
He says the current altcoin market cap can compare to that of Bitcoin, which has grown two-fold since 2021, but he insists that only altcoin projects with strong use cases and narratives will see the light of day.
