Following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, 2025, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao has pledged 500 Binance Coins (BNB) to Thailand and Myanmar for disaster relief. The earthquake caused significant destruction and loss of life, leaving both countries reeling from its effects.
Zhao’s donation will help provide immediate financial aid, facilitating the relief efforts underway in the region. Zhao plans to distribute the funds directly via Binance and Binance Thailand to ensure swift assistance if necessary.
Earthquake Strikes Thailand and Myanmar
According to The Guardian, the earthquake struck around 1:20 PM local time, with its epicenter approximately 10 miles from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The region experienced severe infrastructure damage, including widespread flooding, leading to at least 144 confirmed fatalities.
Rescue operations continue, with the number of casualties expected to rise. Over 730 people have been injured in the disaster, with many trapped under collapsed buildings.
Myanmar’s junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has urged international communities to extend their support, calling for all available aid to assist with the ongoing recovery efforts.
As first responders continue to work, the urgency for help grows, and countries around the world are mobilizing to provide necessary relief.
Binance Co-Founder Pledges Relief Funds
Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as “CZ,” has committed to donating 500 BNB each to both Myanmar and Thailand in the wake of the earthquake. The total value of the donation, given the current price of BNB at $608.37, amounts to over $600,000.
I will donate 500 BNB each to Myanmar and Thailand.
Is there a transparent on-chain donation system with DID? If not, I will rely on @Binance and @Binance_TH_ to distribute.

Zhao made this announcement on March 28, 2025, through a post on social media platform X, where he expressed his concern for the affected regions.
Zhao stated that the funds would be distributed through Binance or Binance Thailand if a suitable third-party donation platform is not found. This donation aims to provide quick access to funds for immediate relief efforts, leveraging Binance’s global infrastructure to streamline the process.
Crypto Donations as an Effective Aid Mechanism
Cryptocurrency has increasingly been recognized as an effective tool for disaster relief, particularly in regions where traditional banking and financial systems may be disrupted.
The advantages of digital assets, including low transaction costs, rapid settlement times, and cross-border accessibility, make them ideal for delivering aid quickly and efficiently.
In the past, cryptocurrency has proven valuable in similar disaster scenarios. For instance, after the 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, philanthropist Haluk Levent used crypto donations to raise funds for the victims.
Similarly, The Giving Block, a company that facilitates crypto-based charity work, raised over $1 million for the victims of the Maui wildfires in 2023, as reported by ETHNews.
