Chun Wang, an early Bitcoin (BTC) miner and entrepreneur, has made history as the first known Bitcoiner to travel to space. He was part of the SpaceX Fram2 mission, launched late Monday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Elon Musk-owned aerospace technology firm SpaceX confirmed that the Falcon 9 rocket successfully carried the Dragon Resilience spacecraft into polar orbit at 9:46 p.m. Eastern Time. The Fram2 crew of four civilians became the first to enter polar orbit and see Earth’s poles from space.

Chun Wang Goes Beyond Bitcoin Mining to Space Travel

Chun Wang, who was born in China and later became a Maltese citizen, started mining Bitcoin in 2011. He co-founded F2Pool, one of the largest Bitcoin mining pools. Afterward, he launched Stakefish, which provides staking services for proof-of-stake blockchains. His journey with Bitcoin has now taken him beyond Earth.

Although this was Wang’s first time in space, he was named the Mission Commander for Fram2. Wang noted that the mission placed him among the few hundred people who have ever orbited the Earth. Also, three other crew members boarded the spaceship.

These include cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen, electrical engineer Rabea Rogge, and polar explorer Eric Philips, who also served as the medical officer. The cost of the mission was not publicly shared, but it has been in preparation since August 2024 and Wang funded the mission.

Bitcoin Miner And Crew To Perform Scientific Research in Space

The Fram2 mission was not just about space travel. The crew is conducting 22 experiments to help improve space exploration and human health research. The space travelers will take the first X-ray in space, study how exercise helps keep muscles and bones strong, and even grow mushrooms in microgravity.

When they return to Earth, the crew will try to exit the spacecraft without help from medical teams. This will help researchers understand how the human body adjusts after spending time in space.

Each crew member has experience exploring Earth’s polar regions. Their mission was named Fram2 after the Norwegian polar exploration ship Fram, which participated in North and South Pole expeditions between 1893 and 1912.

Bitcoin and SpaceX’s Growing Connection

Wang’s trip to space is not the first time Bitcoin and SpaceX have been linked. In 2021, Elon Musk said that SpaceX owned Bitcoin. He also shared that outside of Tesla stock, Ethereum (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE) were his most valuable personal assets, with Bitcoin being his largest holding.

In March 2024, blockchain analytics firm Arkham claimed to have identified Bitcoin addresses belonging to Tesla and SpaceX. According to Arkham, Tesla holds over 11,500 Bitcoin worth nearly one billion dollars. Likewise, the aerospace company holds over 8,000 Bitcoin units, valued at about 700 million dollars.
