GCash has added support for USDC, making it easier for Filipinos to send, save, and spend digital dollars. Over 100 million GCash users can now buy, hold, and send USDC through GCrypto, the app’s crypto platform.

USDC differs from Bitcoin and Ethereum because it holds its value through a direct link to U.S. dollar rates, thus creating stability in payment and savings.

Why This is a Big Deal

The Philippines marks GCash as its biggest digital payment service. This transaction system handles a yearly volume reaching $65 billion, which translates into 3.8 trillion pesos. GCash operates through its key operators, which include Ant Group and Ayala Corporation, with 917 Ventures. Through USDC integration, GCash can improve its crypto services by providing Filipinos with simple digital transaction capabilities.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of this move is overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). In 2024 alone, Filipinos abroad sent home a record $38.3 billion, accounting for 8-10% of the country’s GDP. Present-day remitting systems face two major problems: slowness, costliness, and accessibility issues.

Circle’s Expansion & Growing Stablecoin Adoption

This move also strengthens Circle’s global stablecoin network. According to Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire the integration of USDC with GCash establishes their platform. They can now serve over 100 million new users from the market. The stablecoin market is entering a state of increasing market competition.

The stablecoin market faces an emerging threat from Bank of America (BoA) alongside TradFi giants since they aim to compete with major issuers such as Circle and Tether. The achieved progress still faces continued worries. While blockchain is transparent, some users worry about privacy. One DeFi researcher, Ignas, highlighted a key issue: When you send USDC, the recipient can see your wallet address. This might not be ideal for small transactions, like buying a drink.

GCash is Playing the Long Game

This USDC integration enters the market as GCash anticipates conducting its major IPO. GCash will attempt to achieve an estimated market value of $8 billion before 2025. The platform postponed its public issuance after completing a funding round that boosted its monetary value to $5 billion.

Conclusion

The incorporation of the USDC virtual currency into the GCash digital wallet enables fast digital dollar transactions for millions of Filipino users. Stablecoins enable faster transactions than traditional banks at lower costs for sending money, saving, and daily purchases.
