The victims of the cryptocurrency scam who were tricked into purchasing it in the hope of finding remote job possibilities had more than $2 million stolen from them, and New York Attorney General Letitia James is taking legal action to get it back.

In a statement released on January 9th, James said that some individuals had been deceived into buying cryptocurrencies. By sending them text messages that promised flexible, high-paying employment. The victims were then stolen from.

Surge in Employment Scams

The con artists promised victims a reward if they would open cryptocurrency accounts, deposit funds, and post reviews of items on websites that seemed like real businesses.

Recipients were instructed to maintain a cryptocurrency balance equal to or greater than the purchase price of the items they evaluated. A promise was made to them that “they were not purchasing the products.” And that their money would only be used to “legitimize” the data.

They were promised a commission on top of their money back, but that never happened. James warned the public to be wary of unsolicited text messages offering employment or other possibilities. And said that the stolen cryptocurrency has been frozen with the help of the US Secret Service.

Moreover, James criticized the practice as heartless and immoral, saying it deceives New Yorkers who are trying to make a living wage from home. This comes only a few months after the FBI issued a warning about a surge in frauds using work-from-home employment ads in June 2024.

According to the FBI, con artists have been reaching out to prospective victims via unsolicited calls or texts. Posing as people looking for easy jobs like rating restaurants or “optimizing” services through repetitive button clicks.
