Pierre Poilievre Could Be Canada’s Next Pro-Crypto Prime Minister

  • Pierre Poilievre is the frontrunner to become Canada’s next Prime Minister after Justin Trudeau’s resignation.
  • He has pledged to make Canada a global hub for cryptocurrency and blockchain innovation.
  • Poilievre opposes central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and supports financial freedom for Canadians.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stepped down, bringing focus to opposition leader Pierre Poilievre. He is seen as the leading candidate to be Canada’s next Prime Minister. Poilievre supports cryptocurrency strongly and has promised to make Canada a “crypto capital.” This has gained him both attention and criticism as the country prepares for a federal election.

Pierre Poilievre’s Plan to Make Canada a Crypto Leader

In a video that came out again from a March 2022 campaign event, Poilievre bought a chicken shawarma with Bitcoin. At the event, he talked about his idea to “enable Canada to become the blockchain and crypto capital of the world.” He spoke against Canada’s central banking system and rules on crypto, saying Bitcoin could help Canadians “opt-out” of inflation. These remarks are what the Liberals focused on while running attack ads against Poilievre in 2023 following a sharp collapse in the cryptocurrency market.

Since 2022, Poilievre has been the Conservative Party leader. He has significantly gained popularity over the years. By CBC News poll dated January 6, 2025, the Conservatives were ahead of the ruling Liberals by a 24-point margin. With this, there is a 98% probability that they would have a majority government. Poilievre has always supported financial freedom, including being against central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). He called the Bank of Canada “financially illiterate” and backed a bill to ban CBDCs while keeping cash safe to use.

Trudeau said he will resign on January 6. He will leave once the Liberal Party picks a new leader. He made this choice because of problems within the party, mainly about how he is dealing with the national debt and worries about his plans for trade taxes that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has promised. Parliament will not meet again until March 24, giving the Liberals time to choose a new leader.

Federal Election 2025

Poilievre wants Canada to lead the world in cryptocurrency. He is a crypto supporter, from when he had invested in a Bitcoin ETF before he stopped showing them. Even though he doesn’t list them anymore, continued advocacy of blockchain technology appeals many crypto fans.

The election will take place during the federal elections, which are scheduled to occur before October 20, 2025, and will determine who leads Canada. Poilievre leads in the polls, and his cryptocurrency and blockchain plans could well position Canada at the forefront of digital innovation worldwide-but without a doubt, either as an opportunity or a threat to his vision.
