The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has suggested that the US authorities sell its cheese reserves and use the proceeds to buy Bitcoin (BTC) instead.

In a recent X post, the BPI said that Bitcoin is a better long-term investment than cheese. The group argued that Bitcoin holds its value better over time and would make a smarter investment choice for the US government.

How Much Cheese Does the US Have?

Currently, the US has between 1.4 billion and 1.5 billion pounds of cheese in storage, worth around $3.4 billion. The US government has been storing cheese in cold storage facilities nationwide for years as part of a program to help dairy farmers when prices drop.

However, critics say it is not the best use of money. Mathew Sigel, a research expert at investment firm VanEck, agreed with this sentiment. He questioned why the government still holds so much cheese when it could invest in something more valuable.

Matthew Pines, head of the Bitcoin Policy Institute, suggests other ways for the U.S. to buy more Bitcoin in a recent X post. He thinks the government could use extra cash, gold reserves, foreign currency, or money from selling government-owned businesses.

The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Initiative

This idea comes from President Donald Trump announcing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve initiative. This plan aims to increase the US government’s Bitcoin holdings without using taxpayer money.

Instead, the government seeks ways to fund Bitcoin purchases without creating new costs. David Sacks, White House’s AI and Crypto Czar, explained that any Bitcoin in the reserve will not be sold. This was after he spotlighted 17 billion in Bitcoin by the U.S government.

The new plan is to keep Bitcoin as a long-term asset, just like the US stores gold in Fort Knox. Many Bitcoin supporters think this could help the US economy in the future.

Will the US Sell Its Cheese?

Selling cheese to buy Bitcoin might sound unusual, but it raises an interesting debate. There is no official plan to sell the cheese stockpile yet, but the fact that people are talking about it shows that Bitcoin is getting more attention from the government.

Many people are waiting for news from today’s White House meeting about how President Trump plans to raise funds for the crypto reserve.

Whether the US trades its cheese for Bitcoin or not, one thing is clear: Bitcoin is becoming a big part of America’s financial future.
