Sony unveils the Soneium Mainnet, advancing Web3 with 15M wallets

Sony has launched the mainnet for its blockchain platform, Soneium, marking a significant step in its Web3 strategy. Developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs in partnership with Startale, Soneium aims to transform entertainment, gaming, and finance using blockchain technology.

Following a successful testnet phase, Soneium now has 15 million active wallets and over 47 million transactions. The mainnet launch builds on the earlier testnet, Soneium Minato, which allowed users to explore the platform’s features.

Currently, Soneium’s blockchain contains 6.8 million blocks, with a quick average block time of 2 seconds. It supports a wide ecosystem, including 7.3 million contracts and numerous applications created during the testnet phase.

Sony’s vision for Soneium is to create a blockchain-driven internet that encourages creativity and empowers users to embrace Web3. Sota Watanabe, Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, stated the mission is to make Web3 accessible while promoting innovation and collaboration.

To enhance user experience, Soneium has launched various infrastructure services. The Fan Marketing Platform by SNFT Inc. offers a comprehensive solution for NFT project launches, while S.BLOX crypto exchange services provide new opportunities for creators and brands in blockchain.

Sony’s entry into Web3 follows its acquisition of the Japanese crypto exchange WhaleFin, now renamed S.BLOX, which supports its broader Web3 strategy. Additionally, Soneium has partnered with Chainlink to implement the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), improving connectivity with other blockchains.

The mainnet launch allows for a smooth transition of projects from the testnet, ensuring easy migration for developers. Announced in August 2024, Soneium is set to play a vital role in Web3 innovation, focusing on accessibility and user experience to lead in blockchain adoption.
