The developer behind the AQUA Bitcoin wallet raises $5M to develop its Liquid Network wallet AQUA

JAN3, the creators of the Bitcoin wallet AQUA, have successfully secured $5 million in seed funding to enhance the development of their Bitcoin-centric superapp.

The funding round was spearheaded by Fulgur Ventures, with participation from notable investors including Tether, Grupo Salinas, Lightning Ventures, and East Ventures. This latest funding follows an earlier pre-seed round in which JAN3 raised $620,000 in early 2023.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, highlighted the wallet’s success in achieving a strong product-market fit by effectively combining Bitcoin savings with USDT spending. As part of their strategic plans, JAN3 will allocate $1 million of the new funding to establish a Bitcoin treasury, having already acquired 12 BTC at an average price of $83,333.33 each.

The announcement emphasizes that this seed funding will propel AQUA towards its goal of onboarding a billion users to Bitcoin. The company aims to focus on growth and expand its Marketplace integrations, which will include credit cards, loans, and local on/off ramps.

The funding announcement coincided with the 16th anniversary of Bitcoin’s Genesis Block mining. AQUA also supports the Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain developed by Blockstream, and integrates Tether’s stablecoin.
