The Tron chain now offers you to pay gas fees in $USDT instead of $TRX. This makes it easier to perform transactions on Tron.
It means that you don’t have to swap crypto for $TRX anymore. Many chains and wallets already offer this kind of service. So, let’s take a closer look at what this means for Tron.
New Gas Payments Options on Tron
There are already plenty of chains and wallets that offer payments options in more than 1 crypto. Tron is now following in their footsteps. Instead of its native $TRX, you can now pay gas fees in $USDT. Currently, that’s only available with the TronLink Wallet.
Gas free transactions are now live on #TRON, how will you use them? https://t.co/GMzI2r2Cgj

TronLink Wallet, Justin Sun, Tron’s CEO, and the Tron chain all call this gas free. However, be aware that you still need to pay gas fees. This name is misleading, and the Tron transactions in TronLink Wallet are not free. You still need to pay transaction fees.
This is how TronLink describes their definition of their gas free transaction.
“A GasFree wallet is a digital wallet that enables users to make on-chain transactions without incurring standard gas fees. This innovation streamlines transfers by allowing the transaction fee to be paid in just the transferring currency.’
In other words, when you want to transfer $USDT on Tron, you don’t need $TRX anymore to pay for the gas fees. Instead, you can use $USDT. This increases the user experience and makes transactions on Tron easier. There’s no need to always have $TRX available to pay transaction fees. However, be aware that despite the name ‘GasFree’, you still need to pay transaction fees.
Today, I tried the Gas Free feature recently introduced on the Tron network.@TronLinkWallet is the first Tron ecosystem wallet to deploy this feature. Overall, the new Gas Free update is quite impressive—once set up, users no longer need to use TRX to transfer USDT.

Sun would like to see that all Tron wallets use this option. That’s why he mentioned a 90% subsidy of the fees. This allows you to make $USDT transactions on Tron for under $1. Wallets that Sun mentioned include, among others,
- imToken Wallet
- Trust Wallet
- Bitget Wallet
- Binance Wallet
- TokenPocket Wallet
How to Set Up a TronLink Gas Free Wallet?
Here’s a guide on how you can set up the TronLink “GasFree’ Wallet. However, be aware that there’s an activation fee when you use the wallet for the first time. The TronLink Wallet only supports TRC-20 supported tokens. So, you don’t have to worry that you transfer unsupported tokens by accident. The wallet won’t accept these transfers and will give you a warning. The TronLink Wallet is great to use in Tron’s DeFi ecosystem.
To sum up, Tron now allows you to pay for transactions on their chain, with other crypto that $TRX. Currently, only the TronLink Wallet offers this option.
