Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, recently announced that it would not end its fact-checking program outside of the United States. This decision comes after Meta informed the Brazilian government that the removal of this feature would only apply in the United States for the time being.
According to a letter sent to the Attorney General of Brazil, Meta explained that the removal of fact-checking in the United States was part of a broader effort to test and refine a new “community notes” program before expanding it to other countries. This program, similar to that used by X platform of Elon Musk, aims to find a balance between freedom of expression and security on Meta’s platforms.
Although the removal of fact-checking may lead to abusive forms of freedom of expression, the company already has automated systems in place to identify and manage serious violations, such as terrorism, child sexual exploitation, fraud, and scams. However, Brazil has expressed its dissatisfaction with this decision, stating that the country would not allow social networks to turn into “digital carnage or barbarity”.
Mark Zuckerberg in disgrace?
This decision by Meta comes in a tense political context. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been criticized for yielding to pressure from the Trump administration, with some alleging he may have deceived his users about freedom of expression. Indeed, Trump threatened to take action against tech companies that did not adhere to his content moderation guidelines. The removal of fact-checking in the United States is perceived by some as an attempt by Meta to comply with Trump’s demands.
In summary, while Meta has decided to maintain fact-checking outside the United States, the removal of this feature in the United States raises questions about the future of content moderation, especially given the censorship concerns raised by Elon Musk’s new X algorithm. The implementation of the “community notes” program will be closely monitored by governments and users, who are waiting to see how this new approach will impact the quality and reliability of information shared online.
