A Major Catastrophe Under Works, Humphrey Shares

Humphrey, while speaking at the panel discussion titled “Geopolitics in the Modern World: Powers, Resources, and Global Trade Wars” at the ASEAN Economic Outlook 2025 seminar, shared his comments on the current ASEAN outlook. He reiterated how the rising global tensions may have a catastrophic effect globally and that ASEAN needs to protect itself from the devastating impact they may bring with themselves.

Amid such sparking tension, Humphrey urged the bloc to adopt a united front and exhibit unity in times of great global distress. He later praised the bloc for its strategy of walking at a neutral pace.

“You need to work as a bloc to insulate yourselves and maintain a neutral stance,” Humphrey advised. “I must say, the region has done a very good job of walking the neutral path. I hope they can continue to do that.”

Humphrey later emphasized how globally changing narratives may significantly impact ASEAN. The ten bloc nations need to strengthen their collective power to combat the collective geopolitical changes. Humphrey shared how such jarring changes could impact foreign investor sentiment, impacting market stability in the long haul.

“If China catches a cold, the US catches a cold, ASEAN feels it too, and that’s a big concern,” he noted.

ASEAN News: The US Has Shown Disinterest In Southeast Asian Countries- Humphrey

The EU head later shared a striking statement, an observation stating how the US has not been very interactive with Southeast Asian countries since Obama became the president of the United States.

“The US has shown a remarkable level of disinterest in Southeast Asia since [US president] Barack Obama was in office.”

When asked about his own preferences, he shared how he thinks Kamala Harris would be a better presidential choice for the US, a candidate who may do well in Southeast Asian countries.

“Personally, I hope it’s Harris. I think that’s well in general for Southeast Asia,” he said.
