Binance Executive Denied Bail In Nigeria Amid Health Concerns

A Nigerian court has rejected the bail application of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who was arrested in February. Gambaryan applied for bail because of his poor health condition while he stood trial for money laundering and currency manipulation. The court took into consideration his medical condition and admitted him to a hospital with a directive that he should remain in custody.

According to a recent report, Gambaryan’s arrest in Nigeria has captured international attention given the fact that he is a high ranking official of Binance. He was first arrested for money laundering, currency manipulation and tax evasion but the last was dropped later. He is still in Kuje prison, a common detention center for Boko Haram members and other terrorists.

Gambaryan has been in custody and his health has greatly worsened. He is also ill with malaria, pneumonia, and tonsillitis. Furthermore, he has a disc problem and has to use a crutch. In addition, he needs surgery that hasn’t been done since July.

Worsening Health Condition

Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, noted that medical attention, which it is alleged that the Prison cannot afford, is essential. However, the court refused to grant him bail, saying that there is still a legal process that needs to be followed. However, it was found that Gambaryan should be taken to a hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

SEC to Crack Down on Unregulated Exchanges in Nigeria Soon

This decision of the court to deny bail has sparked a heated debate concerning the treatment of high profile detainees with health issues. The court, thus, acknowledged that Gambaryan was in a critical condition though it decided to keep him in detention.

Concerns Over Detainee Rights

Gambaryan is still in custody, and the health condition and the case are being monitored by the international community. The result of this case may be important for the further development of this industry and Nigeria’s ability to handle high profile cases and provide medical attention in case of health issues.
