Elon Musk Removing Twitter’s Block Feature – Upsetting People

AIG PRE SALE

The person in charge of Twitter said they want to remove the block feature. This upset many users because they think it’s not safe without it.

Elon Musk, the person who owns Twitter, surprised people on Friday. He said that he’s planning to get rid of the option to block other users on the platform. Not many people seem to agree with this decision.

He mentioned that the block feature will only stay for direct messages (DMs). He thinks that this feature doesn’t really make sense.

This decision came after a tweet from an account called Telsa Owners Silicon Valley. They asked if it’s better to block someone or just mute them. When you block someone, they can’t see your tweets. But when you mute them, you can still see their tweets, but their tweets won’t show up in your feed.

Jack Dorsey, who helped start Twitter and used to be its CEO, said he supports getting rid of the block feature. He thinks it’s better to let users just mute accounts if they want to. He showed his support by replying with the “100” emoji.

But most people on Twitter disagreed with this idea. Many users don’t like Elon Musk’s plan, even those who used to support him. They think that removing the block feature will hurt users who use it to stop hurtful tweets from showing up.

A person named Geoffrey Miller, who writes books and teaches about psychology, tweeted to Elon Musk. He said that he likes most of the things Elon Musk does, but blocking is important for people’s safety. He mentioned that:

There are threats like stalkers, mean trolls, and cancel culture, and blocking helps people stay safe. He asked Elon Musk to think about it again and not remove the feature.

One user named “Chairman Birb Bernanke” questioned why there are constant changes that make Twitter worse each day. They wondered if this was a way to test how much people can endure, and why remove the block option. They use it to stop hundreds of accounts from harassing them and don’t understand the purpose of removing it.

Another user named Greg, who often talks with famous people like Elon Musk and retired NFL star Tom Brady, also spoke up. He supports the block feature because it helps keep scammers and bots away from his posts.

Crypto influencer Crypto Wendy O shared her thoughts too. She said that now, without the block feature, people will have to deal with threats, bad behavior, and spam bots that harm their audience.

On other social media platforms that started recently, like Meta’s Threads, BlueSky, and decentralized platforms like Minds and Mastodon, the ability to block accounts is a normal feature.

A person named Wall Street Silver said that removing the block feature is a big mistake. They mentioned that there are hurtful people on Twitter that users don’t want to deal with, and blocking them gives peace of mind. It usually makes the online harassers go away.

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter last year, he has made many important changes to the platform. In July, he said that Twitter’s name and logo would be X, even though many still call it by its old name and talk about “tweets.”

Changes also happened to Tweetdeck, a special Twitter tool. Now, it’s only for people who pay for the Twitter Blue service. The same goes for basic user verification. Some Twitter users think that the block feature might also become something you have to pay for, just like those other changes.

Eva Galperin, who works in cybersecurity, shared a thought. She said that she can imagine a future where, after a week of removing the block button, Elon Musk might say that only Twitter Blue subscribers can use the block feature.
