Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), has obtained licenses to process money or currency in seven U.S. states. These states include Maryland, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (previously Twitter), has acquired licenses in seven U.S. states to operate as a money or currency transmitter. The latest license was obtained from Rhode Island. While this license permits processing crypto payments, it also covers various payment providers such as PayPal or Venmo.
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, which was formerly known as Twitter, has secured payments licenses across several U.S. states, including the recent acquisition of a currency transmitter license in Rhode Island. Even though Musk has hinted at incorporating cryptocurrency support on the platform, the obtained licenses enable a wider range of payment services.
Musk envisions X evolving into more than just a social media platform, aiming to become an “everything app.” The licenses acquired since June in states like Arizona, Maryland, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, and New Hampshire indicate a potential expansion into nationwide payment processing similar to services like Venmo or PayPal, the latter of which Musk co-founded.
The Rhode Island license is crucial not only for facilitating payments but also for potentially offering cryptocurrency-related services.
Elon Musk’s Idea for Blockchain Social Media and Payment Integration
Elon Musk, the well-known entrepreneur, shared his vision for a blockchain-based social media platform that includes payment integration even before his attempt to buy Twitter for $43 billion in April 2022. He highlighted the need for such innovation. Rhode Island’s Department of Business Regulation (DBR) clarifies in an FAQ that their currency transmission license covers companies engaged in transmitting money for customers, encompassing both traditional wire transfers (like Western Union) and electronic transfers (like PayPal).
Importance of Rhode Island’s Currency Transmission License
The currency transmission license issued by Rhode Island also has relevance in the realm of crypto exchange and custody activities. There are exceptions for fintech companies, particularly when money transmission isn’t their primary focus.
These licenses go beyond just crypto payments, extending to a wider range of services. For instance, in New Hampshire, the definition of “money transmission” includes activities such as selling payment instruments, handling stored value, and receiving currency for transmission.
Involvement with Convertible Virtual Currency
Furthermore, the state of New Hampshire specifies that engaging in activities with convertible virtual currency, including buying or selling, falls under the category of being a money transmitter based on federal regulations. This underscores the comprehensive scope of these licenses and their application to various financial activities involving digital currency.
Similar Licenses for Western Union, PayPal, and X
Western Union and PayPal hold the same type of state licenses as Elon Musk’s platform, X. Additionally, they acquire additional licenses that align with the specific services they provide and the states they operate in.
