Huobi, one of the biggest and most established cryptocurrency exchanges owned by Justin Sun, the CEO of the TRON ecosystem, has faced an attack from one of its former employees through the iToken crypto wallet service.
A Chinese blockchain and cryptocurrency journalist named Wu Blockchain reported that the former employee had developed a Trojan horse virus, which led to the exposure of crucial data for some users of Huobi Wallet, now rebranded as iToken.
Confidential Codes of Wallet Locations Exposed
Wu Blockchain disclosed that certain user mnemonics or private keys from the crypto wallet service, previously named Huobi Wallet and now rebranded as iToken, associated with personal X accounts, have been exposed. This breach has caused alarm as it grants unauthorized access to the wallet addresses.
As per the information shared by the Chinese blockchain and cryptocurrency journalist, the attack on the exchange’s wallet service was executed using a Trojan horse virus created by a former employee of the exchange. During the attack, the mnemonics or private keys of the crypto wallet were compromised. Additionally, it’s reported that the former Huobi employee responsible for the attack has been apprehended and questioned during a police operation.
Cryptocurrency Holdings Moved to a Safe Wallet Location
Although Huobi’s official crypto wallet, iToken, presently alerts users about the security hazards linked to specific wallet addresses, steps are being taken to regain the stolen digital assets.
Huobi’s security team has notified Refundyourcoins, an asset protection service, and they have transferred the stolen cryptocurrencies to a secure wallet location.Refundyourcoins will initiate a recovery process for Bitcoin, Ethereum, TRON, and XRP, making it possible to recover the stolen cryptocurrencies.
