Helium’s MOBILE Network HIP 130 and 131

In a post on X, the team at Helium Foundation announced that MOBILE Network HIP 130 and 131 passed.

According to their notes, HIP 130 passed with over 96% votes and HIP 131 passed with over 99% votes, both of which are above the passing threshold.

With the passing of HIP 130, compatible Wi-Fi access points including the ones already deployed in locations worldwide, can be configured to support MOBILE Service Providers like Helium Mobile.

These Data-Only Hotspots will only earn rewards for passing paid data and will not receive rewards Proof-of-Covergae or Hex Boosting rewards. Developers will release the implementation details soon.

HIP 131 allows Service Providers to start affecting aging with Oracle Hex boosting areas, as well as Service Provider Boosted hexes, within the highest-earning areas.

This will use the same cellular tower correlation data called Call Detail Record, and automation that has been employed so far for the anti-gaming HIP 125, in preparation for the full implementation of HIP 118.

Also, according to the same post, after 7 days from this notice, Wi-Fi hotspots will need to be verified and mapped via tower correlation or CDR to qualify for PoC rewards in dense urban areas. In the case of CBRS radios, this will happen 21 days from this notice.

What is Helium (HNT)?

Helium (HNT) is a decentralized blockchain-powered network for IoT devices. The Helium mainnet was launched in 2019 and it allows low-powered wireless devices to communicate with each other and send data across the network of nodes.

Nodes come in the form of so-called Hotspots which are a mix of a wireless gateway and a blockchain mining device. Users who operate nodes mine and earn rewards in Helium’s native token, HNT.
