Meta and Microsoft have collaborated to launch Llama 2, an open-source large language model specifically optimized for Microsoft’s Windows and Azure cloud computing platforms.
Meta and Microsoft have announced a partnership to introduce Llama 2, a free open-source model available for research and commercial purposes. Llama 2 has been trained on 40% more publicly accessible online data sources compared to its predecessor, Llama 1, according to Meta’s statement.
Llama 2, the new open-source large language model developed by Meta and Microsoft, demonstrates superior performance compared to many competitor LLMs in coding, proficiency, reasoning, and knowledge tests, processing twice as much context. However, Meta acknowledged that Llama 2 may not match the efficiency of closed-source competitors like OpenAI’s GPT-4, as mentioned in one of their research papers.

The decision to open-source Llama 2 comes after the success of Llama 1, which received substantial demand upon its limited release in February. However, Llama 1 encountered challenges, including unauthorized leakage online, while ChatGPT gained around 100 million users within its initial three months of launch.
With Microsoft’s investments in OpenAI and the partnership with Meta, the tech giant solidifies its position in the AI domain. Nevertheless, Meta faced criticism from U.S. senators over perceived inadequate safeguards in the initial version of Llama, raising concerns about potential malicious use of the model.
