Sam Bankman-Fried Seeks Weekday Freedom for Legal Defense Work

Sam Bankman-Fried’s lawyers say he’s having trouble reviewing lots of documents related to his case while he’s in jail. He wants to spend five weekdays outside to work with his legal team on his defense.

Last week, the government gave him hundreds of thousands of pages of messages from a chat app, but he couldn’t read them all in jail. His lawyer, Christian Everdell, said that it’s impossible for him to go through all of this in the time he has.

Everdell said that if Bankman-Fried could meet his legal team and use a laptop with the internet at the courthouse, it would help the case move faster. This is important because his trial for fraud is supposed to start in October.

Bankman-Fried is saying he’s innocent, but he’s accused of doing a big fraud that took billions of dollars from FTX customers for himself.

Prosecutors want him to share information about the advice he got and where it came from, or they say he shouldn’t be allowed to talk about this in the trial.

They said they can give him information on special drives that can be used on computers at the jail where he is. But not all the information can be put on a laptop. The jail wouldn’t let him move to another place to use a laptop. The judge will decide what to do before the trial starts.
