This New Crypto Academy in Venezuela is Training the Next Wave of Blockchain Innovators

  • The academy’s curriculum includes diplomas and courses in blockchain development, global trading, and management of crypto assets.
  • With over 14 expert facilitators, the academy integrates into UCAB’s research, promoting innovation free from traditional biases.

On October 23, 2024, the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) in Venezuela launched the Blockchain, Trading & Crypto (BT&C) Academy. This new initiative, located on the UCAB’s Montalbán campus, is designed to offer extensive training on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. The academy aims to integrate both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in these rapidly evolving fields.

The BT&C Academy, under the leadership of Aníbal Garrido, a well-known cryptocurrency enthusiast in Venezuela, is established with the goal of nurturing a new generation of specialists adept in emerging technologies and global finance. The curriculum is structured to move beyond theoretical discussion, facilitating hands-on experiences with digital technologies.

Starting in November 2024, the academy will offer a series of diplomas and courses, including a Diploma in Blockchain Development and Web3, a Trading Course for Non-Traders, and a Course on Management and Commerce in P2P Markets.

More advanced programs, such as the Diplomas in Global Trading and Investments and in Crypto Assets and Digital Economy, are scheduled to begin in 2025. Enrollment is currently open, with opportunities for scholarships available through the academy’s website.

Garrido emphasized the practical nature of the academy’s approach, stating that the program is designed not only to discuss cryptocurrencies but to engage directly with them, such as interacting with Bitcoin wallets and nodes, and viewing NFTs in a gallery-like setting.

“Our difference is experiential. It’s not just talking about trading, but living it; it’s not just talking about cryptocurrencies, but interacting with a wallet or even a Bitcoin node; it’s directly seeing an NFT in a gallery.”

The academy also seeks to provide a grounded perspective on the use of cryptocurrencies, promoting an understanding that these tools are not merely for rapid wealth generation but are effective for managing finances in complex economic environments. The curriculum is developed to foster ethical use and a deep understanding of the financial and technological aspects of cryptocurrencies.

“The contribution of Bitcoin and the entire ecosystem from which it is derived has resulted in the creation of a technology that allows society to have an additional tool to combat complex situations,” he said.

Fourteen educators will deliver the academic content, ensuring a broad range of viewpoints and expertise. The BT&C Academy plans to integrate into UCAB’s research activities, aiming to contribute to innovation and the development of new knowledge in the field, without the biases often associated with less academic environments.

Arturo Peraza, UCAB’s rector, commented on the curriculum’s broader implications, suggesting it challenges traditional financial systems and promotes a vision of global citizenship with shared values across borders, as we have previously reported on Crypto News Flash.

This initiative is significant in the context of Venezuela, where cryptocurrency adoption is notably high—the country ranks 13th globally according to Chainalysis. The establishment of the BT&C Academy addresses a clear need for specialized education in blockchain and cryptocurrencies, reflecting the increasing integration of these technologies into mainstream educational offerings in Venezuela.
