An important decision has been announced in the closely-watched Thodex cryptocurrency exchange case in Turkey. The verdict concerning the founder, Faruk Fatih Özer, has been disclosed.
Thodex Founder Found Guilty
The detained defendant, Faruk Fatih Özer, appeared in the trial at the Istanbul Anatolian 17th Criminal Court of First Instance through the Audio and Video Informatics System (SEGBIS) from prison. His defense attorney was also present during the proceedings.
During the trial for smuggling, Özer requested acquittal and also asked for the deferment of the verdict pronouncement even if a sentence was given. The outcome was a 7-month and 15-day imprisonment with the application of mitigating factors, and the verdict pronouncement was deferred.
Özer could potentially avoid serving any prison time for major fraud charges by paying only the criminal fine. His account activities from 2017 were scrutinized, and despite the notification, he failed to submit the required documents from that period.
Özer is facing trial for smuggling under the tax procedure law, with potential punishment ranging from 18 months to 5 years of imprisonment.
