UAE Ranks 5th Globally in 2024 AI Index, Surpassing Major Nations

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has secured the fifth spot in the 2024 AI Index, issued by Stanford University, outperforming several leading nations.

The ranking, which saw the United States, China, the United Kingdom, India, and the UAE take the top five positions, highlights the country’s growing leadership in artificial intelligence (AI). France, South Korea, Germany, Japan, and Singapore followed in the rankings from sixth to tenth place.

The AI Index is based on data collected from 36 countries, measuring the AI ecosystem across key indicators such as scientific research, private sector investments, patents, and more. According to the report, this comprehensive dataset provides a clear overview of the global AI landscape.

Nestor Masley, Director of the AI Index Project, explained that global interest in AI has surged in recent years, sparking debates over which countries are leading the field. However, he noted a lack of reliable data to assess the relative standings of these nations.

The AI Index aims to fill this gap by providing an analytical tool for policymakers and stakeholders to evaluate and compare AI progress.

The UAE has long been a strong proponent of AI technology, launching its National AI Strategy in 2017. The country has distinguished itself by appointing Omar Sultan Al Olama as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, a move that underscores its commitment to the sector. In 2020, the UAE Cabinet introduced a national AI policy, aiming to prevent the misuse of AI while promoting its positive applications.

Moreover, the UAE’s AI achievements have continued to grow in recent years. Last year, the country appointed AI CEOs across major federal entities to further advance its leadership in the field. Additionally, G42, an Emirati company, launched the Falcon 2 large language model, which competes with the world’s latest models, and the Jais Chatbot, offering smart services in both Arabic and English.

In another milestone, the UAE’s strategic partnership with Microsoft led to the opening of the AI for Good Lab in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the countries’ shared commitment to developing AI responsibly and for the betterment of humanity.

With continued investment and innovation, the UAE is poised to remain at the forefront of global AI development, setting the stage for continued leadership in the field.
