Who Will Attend BRICS Summit 2024? Key Leaders Confirmed

One of the most important events in the geopolitical world is nearing in less than one week. Indeed, with the BRICS Summit 2024 set to occur over two days between October 22nd and 24th, there is a growing interest in what the bloc could unveil, and what countries could be in line to attend the event.

In 2023, the event became one of the most important geopolitical developments of the year. Specifically, the alliance welcomed four new members in its first expansion effort since 2001. Moreover, it reaffirmed its commitment to the growing de-dollarization efforts of the global south.

An interesting aspect of the nearing BRICS Summit is where it will take place. The event is usually held at a different member nation every year. This allows every country to have a turn hosting the various discussions while welcoming alliance nations into its borders.

That designation is referred to as the BRICS Chairmanship, and it lasts throughout the year. In 2023, South Africa was alliance chairman and hosted that year’s iteration of the gathering. That fact was rather troublesome at the time. Russian President Vladimir Putin was subject to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC), of which South Africa is a member.

However, the gathering took place without a hitch and became the alliance’s most successful. This year, those issues will not come into play. In 2024, Russia was chosen to be the chairmanship of the bloc and host the summit.

In just five days, the event will take place in Kazan, Russia, and it should see a plethora of nations arrive in the country to talk about the immediate and medium-term future of the economic alliance.

The BRICS summit is a chance for several nations to discuss the continued evolution of the alliance’s dealings and initiatives. This means that it will welcome both members of the collective and countries with aspirations to join.

This year, the bloc is set to introduce partner nations. This could have expansion looking very different than it did last year. Although the bloc will likely add new members, it won’t be in the same way it did in 2023.

Many of those nations are set to attend, according to reports. Specifically, there are more than 32 countries taking part in the gathering and discussions. Among them will be a lot of nations that have expressed interest in joining.

This means that Turkey, the first NATO member to seek BRICS membership, has confirmed its key leaders will attend the gathering. Moreover, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Venezuela, and Cuba will send delegates to the event. Many of these leaders have confirmed they will be in Kazan next week.

The BRICS 2024 Summit should have a full house throughout the two days. Moreover, its nine members have confirmed they will be there. This means that Russia, Brazil, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia should be present.

Yet, there is still some concern about one nation’s place. That country is Saudi Arabia. There has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the nation’s potential inclusion into the alliance. In 2023, it was among the first expansion nations for the bloc. However, it has yet to confirm that decision.

That has likely been because of growing geopolitical discontent. Indeed, they have not yet formally announced their place in the alliance. Yet, the bloc still operates under the assumption that Saudi Arabia remains a member.

Russia had previously confirmed they would be present, but the nation clarified that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman would not be present.

Alternatively, they would be sending a delegate in his place. Although it is not preferred for the bloc, it still denotes their participation. Conversely, it does reinforce the concerns regarding its membership in the economic group. Saudi Arabia was a key part of the 2023 gathering.

More than who will be present at the BRICS 2024 summit, is what the world can expect. The alliance is set to initiate a massive shift in macroeconomics through the arrival of its BRICS Pay system. That should be a massive moment for the global south and its continued efforts toward increased competition with the West.

That should dominate the proceedings. Along with it should be continued hope for potential expansion. Specifically, the BRICs group should officially introduce its partner nations, and explore what their role should be. The bloc is expected to welcome as many as ten during the 2024 Summit.
