Elon Musk, the controversial tech billionaire, has issued a warning on Twitter about a critical issue with messaging apps, specifically expressing his distrust of WhatsApp.
This tweet has divided the crypto community, with many agreeing with Musk’s concerns, while others, including some major crypto influencers on X, are skeptical about the seriousness of the issue.
Musk Flags WhatsApp Security Issues, Crypto Community Reacts
Elon Musk tweeted that WhatsApp, the messaging application, transfers private user data regularly, stating it happens “every night.” He pointed out that some users still believe the app is secure.
Gabor Gurbacs, Tether and VanEck’s strategic advisor, expressed doubt about Musk’s claims, noting that WhatsApp messages are supposed to be protected by end-to-end encryption. However, Musk shared a video in his tweet showing that WhatsApp activates users’ phone microphones at night, even in their bedrooms, to transmit this “encrypted” data to the company’s servers.
Owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, WhatsApp’s reputation has been tarnished by past incidents of selling user data to advertisers.
In the tweet’s comments, several X users, including entrepreneur John Carmack, questioned Musk about definitive evidence of WhatsApp leaking personal data such as photos, calls, text messages, and audio messages. Despite the skepticism, many supported Musk, sharing his concerns about WhatsApp’s security practices.
Musk, Buterin Criticize Microsoft’s New AI Feature
Earlier this week, Elon Musk, owner of X and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, commented on a new AI feature introduced by Microsoft. The feature, named Recall, is built into Microsoft’s AI assistant, Co-Pilot.
Recall is designed to take regular screenshots of all user activity on PCs and laptops. Microsoft’s CEO clarified that this feature aims to help users search through these screenshots later to recall their previous activities on their devices. He assured that this data would not be exported from their computers to Microsoft databases.
Elon Musk criticized this innovation, comparing it to an episode of the dystopian film series Black Mirror. Ripple CTO and Vitalik Buterin also expressed skepticism about the purposes behind creating this feature as voiced by the Microsoft CEO.
