India has taken a substantial step in the cryptocurrency realm, processing approximately $268.9 billion in crypto transactions from July 2022 to July 2023. Remarkably, India has claimed the top spot in the Central & Southern Asia and Oceanic (CSAO) crypto market, even in the face of elevated tax rates.
India’s Growing Crypto Adoption Despite High Taxes
India’s cryptocurrency adoption is on the rise, defying global trends, despite the imposition of a 30% tax on crypto gains and a 1% tax on digital asset transactions by the government.
India has also claimed the top spot in various crypto sectors, including NFT protocols, lending protocols, centralized exchanges, and decentralized exchange usage. Local firms continue to demonstrate enthusiasm for the crypto market, even as they grapple with taxation challenges.
However, uneven tax enforcement poses a competitive challenge for Indian exchanges. While regulators expect all entities operating in India to collect taxes, most international firms fall short in this regard. Consequently, many Indian players are turning to international investment platforms.
The introduction of the tax deducted at source (TDS) in July 2022 prompted a significant increase in Indian web traffic to global exchanges.
