Thailand Considers Facebook Ban Due to Crypto Scams

Thailand to use computer crime laws against Facebook for not screening scams; Minister says 70% of local online scams involve Facebook, with 300,000 fraud complaints linked.

The Thai government is upset with Facebook, which is now called Meta. They are thinking about stopping people from using Facebook in the country. This is because there are many scams on the platform, especially about crypto and other things.

It was in the news on August 22 that Thailand’s Digital Economy and Society Ministry wants to ask a court to tell Facebook to shut down in the country. They might do this because of all the scam problems.

Thailand vs. Facebook

The ministry in Thailand will use strict computer crime laws to take action. They want to charge Facebook and the scammers who use it. The ministry says Facebook hasn’t done enough to stop scams and bad pages.

These bad pages are paid by customers to target specific groups of people.

Thai Police will also take the scammers to court, both for criminal and civil cases.

The ministry said that Facebook spreads scams that trick people into investing in fake things like companies, cryptocurrencies, exchanges, and fake government groups.

DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said that about 70% of online scams in Thailand are on Facebook. He said that many big companies and famous people have been impersonated to trick people into investing.

The Minister asked Meta (Facebook’s company) to talk about this on August 21, but they didn’t send anyone.

He also said that they requested Facebook’s help to check users or accounts that “pay Facebook for their sponsored pages to post content that tricks people into investing.”

The problem is made worse because a lot of people in Thailand use Facebook. The news says there are 65 million users, which is almost everyone in the country.

Additionally, there have been about 300,000 complaints about Facebook scams in both criminal and civil courts. People and government agencies, like the SEC, made these complaints.

Widespread Social Media Scams

Prae Dumrongmongcolgul, who is in charge of Meta in Thailand, said that scammers change their tactics to avoid the platform’s rules.

In 2022, the financial group in Australia took legal action against Meta. They said the company let crypto scams happen on Facebook, and these scams included well-known people.

In 2021, a group of people in California sued Meta together. They said the company helped scammers by using ads that tricked people and going after users.

Also, WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta too, has a lot of scammers. According to news in the UK, scammers are starting to use the chat app to trick people into giving them money.
