Coinbase, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange, is strongly opposing the lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). They are seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed.
Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, announced that the company will try to get the SEC’s lawsuit against them thrown out. They firmly believe that they will win the legal battle.
The SEC filed a lawsuit against Coinbase on June 6, alleging that the exchange sold unregistered securities and operated as an unregistered securities exchange. However, Grewal stated that Coinbase will file a petition to have the entire lawsuit dismissed.
Coinbase to Defend Against SEC Lawsuit
Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is preparing to defend itself against the SEC’s lawsuit. The company plans to argue that it has never listed securities on its platform and believes that the SEC lacks regulatory authority over cryptocurrency exchanges.
Coinbase further claims that when they announced their registration statement in April 2021, the SEC did not specify any requirements for registration, making them compliant with the rules at that time.
Coinbase Confident in Legal Battle with SEC
During their second-quarter earnings call on August 3, Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, expressed confidence in their position regarding the SEC lawsuit. He stated, “With regard to the case with the SEC, I want to be very clear. We think we can win. We hope to win.”
The company is filing a petition today to have the case dropped, and they expect the court to review their arguments by the end of October.
Clarity in Crypto Regulations is Coinbase’s Priority
Grewal emphasizes that Coinbase’s main objective is to bring clarity to the cryptocurrency industry’s regulatory landscape. The current conflicting messages about crypto regulations need to be addressed. A clear legal framework is essential for fostering innovation and growth in this field.
